Suggested Upgrade Path

For visual astronomy, the bulk of the equipment costs are in the telescope and mount. If these have been chosen properly, there is usually very little need to upgrade. On the other hand, a fully stocked astrophotography setup will contain numerous accessories in addition to the mount, telescope, and camera. Unless you are fortunate enough to be working with an unlimited budget, most of us will start small and slowly upgrade as funds permit and our skills improve.

It is possible to cross over from visual astronomy to astrophotography, although this will usually require a change to an equatorial mount for long duration exposures. If you have invested a significant amount in a large Dobsonian telescope, another option would be to explore video astrophotography using a webcam. The large aperture of the Dobsonian would enable the webcam to capture solar system and brighter deep space objects with relatively short exposure times, although the images are generally inferior to dedicated astrophotography setups.
